Can anyone share their experiences with severe/general anxiety as a teenager and how you cope with it?

I had/have severe social anxiety, and then had to homeschool eventually because of it when the white wizards failed (doctors).

Exercising and avoiding any bad habits like alcohol or smoking will help a lot.

By ruling out underlying causes, such as thyroid problems or hypoglycemia (both can cause the same symptoms of anxiety of panic), it’s falls under the category of psychology.

Most anxiety is the result of negative thought patterns such as "What if the worst thing happens? What if I’m dying? What if I fail this class? What if people don’t like me?"

You keep replaying these negative messages over and over, and it’s a bad habit that you can break. I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for years until I got a very simple piece of advice. Every time you start to have a panicky thought, picture a giant red stop sign in your mind, and mentally yell at yourself to "stop it!" Take a few deep breaths and hold them for 5 seconds, then release slowly. This wil stop the negative recording stuck in your head, and lessen the physical symptoms of anxiety.

Now it’s time to start inputting the good stuff. Imagine yourself dealing with the worst case scenario in a confident, cool and controlled manner. Imagine yourself being successful, happy and healthy. It is amazing how powerful thoughts can be; so powerful in fact, that they can literally affect your health.

It takes about 30 days to begin or break a habit… so try some of these techniques for the next few weeks. Also search the web for helpful sights about overcoming anxiety and put the advice to good use. You are not alone. Millions of people struggle with the same problem daily, and most are unaware that the cure is within their own mind.

If after an honest effort to correct these problems isn’t working, you may need to consult a psychiatrist for evaluation and low-dose medication to get you through the tough times.

Just remember: You are not alone, and nearly everyone has dealt with this issue at some point. Please check out the website below, it has a few good pointers.

I suffered from this when I was younger and it was hell. I went to doctors, psychiatrists, hypnotherapists and psychologists. Nothing helped, for a long time. But with counseling and medication, I was able to finally (after years with it) start to feel better, for the most part.

There is no one, easy, pat answer. Different people will react differently to different treatments. I know it took medication for me to begin to feel better, but I haven’t had to take any medication for it for almost 20 years, although I am able to get a prescription from my doctor if I ever need it. So far so good.

I also believe that as I matured I discovered that having a busy mind reduced my anxiety greatly. Meaning basically that I had other things I worried about (work, money, family) and I guess I feel that life in general helped "iron out" some of the anxiety.

I still experience some anxiety, but I’ve learned to cope and reduce the severity of the attacks to the point that I don’t worry about the situations that used to trigger the attacks, quite so much anymore.

A good talk with a doctor is the best place to start getting better.
