<p>Despite the recent  solutions  to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, its effect on residents of the Gulf states is still a tough subject.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">The nature of this issue, which lasted  almost   3 months, is vast and far reaching. The  ecology   in the Gulf of Mexico has been heavily damaged, dramatically changing the livelihoods of thousands in that area. People&#8217;s lives have been altered  in ways that many of them probably did not think possible.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">Each  day that oil was allowed to flood freely during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the rhythm of life was disrupted . The fishing industry was probably the hardest hit during this disaster. Fishers who have spent years, even generations on the water were suddenly not able to provide the only service that they spent years of their lives perfecting. Not only did this make them unable  to provide for their families, it also drastically decreased the amount of money they spent on supplies, crew, bate and fuel. Captains became unable to pay for mates or marine mechanics. Charter boat captains were unable to take clients out fishing. Hotels, restaurants and beaches that should have been prospering during the high season of summer remained nearly empty. Even industries in other parts of the country which rely on fishing in the Gulf have suffered  considerably   in just a short time.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">Harvesting of seafood from the Gulf has slowed to almost a  total   stop. We can safely say there will be  an extensive    drop   in tourism in the Gulf States and changes in a way of life that has lasted for hundreds of years. That&#8217;s a short explanation of the chain of events dismantling a way of life. Unfortunately, these problems are not likely  to end soon as there is still much oil to be cleaned up and entire ecosystems that will take years to heal properly.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">One of the main problems is immediate financial stress. With little to no money to pay bills, many who&#8217;ve suffered in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill have developed anxiety and <a relpost="nofollow"  href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/goto/major_depression/3494/1" target="_blank">major depression</a> issues. The physical environment unfortunately only contributes to the stress, as the area near people is still ugly and filled with the smell of oil. Even if they can&#8217;t see or smell the oil, the images on TV and the impact on the local economy make it real to them.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">In terms of the psychological impact, the massive scale of this oil spill has given many of the Gulf residents a sense of hopelessness. Their day by day routines have been disrupted, so the Gulf residents are no longer getting up and going to work as they normally would. When routines are broken and people are stressed, they tend to feel a combination of emotions including anger, anxiety and hopelessness. For many, this has led to drinking more alcohol and abusing drugs such as <a relpost="nofollow"  href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/goto/Oxycodone/3494/2" target="_blank">Oxycodone</a>, Xanax or Marijuana to escape the stress.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">At its worse, Gulf residents feel that the oil spill has taken away their identities. Many of the boat captains, shrimpers, fishers and crew hands were born into this unique profession. They don&#8217;t only perform a job. They are uniquely tuned to the environment and raised throughout generations to deal with all its complexities in order to earn a living. Families, friends and communities are geared and knowledgeable about how to survive on the Gulf. Unfortunately, these skills don&#8217;t translate well into other positions. So once a fisher loses their ability to earn for the high season, he is left without a manageable  way to earn a living for the rest of the year. Because of this, many in the fishing industry have started to question their self worth, which inevitably leads to self-esteem issues. The situation reached such a low point that many who couldn&#8217;t take it ended their own lives. On an outward level there are  disturbing   images of death and destruction all around. There is a sense  of panic and anxiety, like the feeling one would have when an uncontrollable fire erupts in a home. It is this kind of feeling that the Gulf residents are experiencing everyday.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">As a Psychiatrist who lives along the East Coast of Florida, the impact for me has been minimal. The suffering endured by the Gulf residents is enormous compared to my own. I am a fanatic fisherman who travels to the Keys, the West Coast of Florida and the Panhandle. It saddens me that my son may not experience all the superb beauty of the Gulf and Florida as I have been able to.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">The question for displaced Gulf residents is, &ldquo;now what?&rdquo; They face financial ruin, depression, anxiety, hopelessness and panic. What should they do? Getting  angry at   BP won&#8217;t help. Stopping the leak has been everyone&#8217;s primary goal. Now that this has been achieved, the focus is on clean-up. The residents of the Gulf need to become empowered in order to organize and take up the process of  restoration . Each person must take charge of his or her life again. Now is the time for a &ldquo;reboot,&rdquo; because the old ways are not an option right now. As disheartening as this may sound, the most effective psychological approach is to focus on the positive and on what can be done. Everyone must open their thinking to new ideas and new ways to live in order to fuel the recovery and restoration of the Gulf economy.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0.2in;">Despite the challenges that this disaster has presented, there are ways in which to make the best of the situation and contribute to the healing of the Gulf and its residents. Now would be a great time to connect with other Gulf residents to share your experiences and ban collectively to assist in the clean-up. If you&#8217;re feeling anger, anxiety and other negative emotions as a result of the oil spill, consider support groups or possibly therapy to help your internal healing process. There are several programs from the Government that can provide financial assistance for psychiatric help and therapy. There are also particular grants available for businesses and employees who have lost income as a result of the oil spill. Residents can learn more about relief efforts and funding and have their concerns heard by visiting such sites as the NRDC at <a relpost="nofollow"  href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/goto/www_nrdc_org/3494/3">www.nrdc.org</a></p>

A <a href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/">panic attack</a> is a condition wherein a person is plagued by unprecedented episodes of panic attacks.</p>
<p> There is a wide-range of causes for having a panic or anxiety attack disorder but they all boil down to one thing &#8211; consistent high levels of anxiety. Every once in a while, all people normally encounter mild <a href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/category/coping-with-anxiety">anxiety attacks</a>. In actuality, it is believed that mild anxiety can actually sharpen your mind; yet, in the event that such anxiety level intensifies and is not remedied ahead of time, it may lead to a serious <a href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/">panic attack</a> disorder.</p>
<p> Hyperventilation is but among the usual <a relpost="nofollow"  href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/goto/panic_attacks_symptoms/3492/3">panic attacks symptoms</a>. Sympathetic response is the ones in charge in preparing the body to either fight or flight after it has been initiated by the brain as a result of being under a lot of tension. One of the symptoms of an initiated sympathetic reaction is increased heartbeat.</p>
<p> Actually, most of the manifestations of a panic or anxiety attack are caused by the sympathetic nervous response. Any tension or anxiety that is occurring within us will involuntarily activate the sympathetic response of the nervous system. Some of these manifestations are diaphoresis, trembling or shaking, nausea, among others.</p>
<p> The duration of the attack is one significant thing I want you to concentrate on because during an attack, you may sense that everything goes slowly. This is a normal feeling for <a href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/">panic attack</a> victims and it is believed that these feelings are the reason why their anxiety levels progress. Most people think they have been suffering from panic attacks already. Remember this &#8211; a single <a href="http://www.overcoming-panic-anxiety.com/">panic attack</a> episode would usually last for 10 to 15 minutes only. Try to relax during the episode and wait until its accompanying symptoms die down; because of course it will eventually end.</p>
<p> Those were the common manifestations of panic attacks, if you don&#8217;t want to experience them again or don&#8217;t want to experience them at all, try to do something to avoid them. I have enumerated the following symptoms for you to know that it&#8217;s not life-threatening, thus, no need to worry that much. </p>
